Fry ups - Do Baked Beans have a place on our National Dish?

Not sure if my comments are welcome on this thread given that we consider "full English" to be a  "National" dish.

Scottish and Irish breakfasts are miles better IMO.

have to agree - I only refer to a "fry up" and rarely a full english. I was refering to a "fry-up" as Great Britain"s National Dish (even though it is probably still something like CHicken tikka masala)

I love soda bread and Potato bread in my fry ups and when I went to my Gran"s (Ulster born and bred) funeral about 10 years ago, I silently thanked her for introducing me to these items.

As for the scottish version, I need a bit of education here. I remember once having haggis in a morning breakfast thing and it was pretty good. However, won"t lose too much sleep if I never have it again.

Am amazed at the love that beans are getting (understandable because they are awesome) for breakfast, but am horrified that tinned tomatoes are loved over standard ones. Even if the standard of fresh tomatoes in this country is generally poor. I just love to fry them with plenty of salt and pepper.

Am waiting for some responses from the Ulster contingent on the beans issue

Well done for bringing this up. I personally can"t stand it. soda bread is a much nicer option.

I know this is a laughable comment given all the crap that is on a fry-up, but

I"m pretty sure that soda bread is even more unhealthy, but with fried bread, I just can"t stand the sensation of fat running through your teeth when you take a bite into it. It just seems to be taking the piss out of your heart.

I have fried bread, but not crispy. It's more of a dunk in the fat and out again (very unhealthy)

Hope that post is tongue in cheek wee man, cos if you ask an Irish person living abroad what food they miss most from back home, potato bread will probably be one of the top answers. or did "Potato bread" never make the metropolis of Westport.

Bloody hell, It"s made from frigging potato"s FFS. And it"s totally suited to frying as it doesn"t tend to soak up oil or fat the way a common sliced loaf might.

2 Fried Tomatoes (real ones, not tinned)
1 round of Eggy Bread
3 Rounds of Bread and Butter
Fruity Brown Sauce
1 Mug of Tea....

3 hours in the armchair feeling absolutely stuffed

eggy bread is there with toast for me. V nice but not needed on my fry up plate. A lot of cafe"s put toast in their fry ups, but its just a cheap filler and an excuse to leave out quality ingredients.

Also, I prefer my eggs fried rather than scrambled and I prefer my breads to be soda or potato.

Have some friends coming up this weekend to watch Accy Stanley v Torquay. I"ll be cooking breakfast (as is the established hosting ritual between us)

I might be a bit late with this but did anybody get through the mega breakfast at Bolton and get it for free in the local cafe, i know there were a few people willing to have a go just wondered if anyone was triumphant.

Nope...Friday night"s festivities kind of precluded anyone feeling up to it on Saturday morning other than me, and I wasn"t going to do it by myself.

Next time...maybe.
